The old part of Ciutadella concentrates a
great historical interest. At first sight the difference is noticed with the new part of
the city, the one that hasbeen built after the demolition of the walls that until last
century surrounded the villa. What today is known as Contramurada, a wide street that
surrounds the old part, points out the perimeter of the old Ciutadella.
The big houses or palaces of the old nobility that today in day
finds its reason of being in Sant Joan's very traditionalist fiestas, show in their
facades the coats of arms of their families. These buildings, built in marés stone, are a
show in themselves, and some of them can be visited.
Ses Voltes' street (the arcades or the arches), probably the most
characteristic in the whole island, harbors great quantity of trade, from traditional
ultramarine, to modern boutiques, going by footwear stores, memories, etc. Other streets
of the old town with great commercial atmosphere are that of Maó, Sa Carnissería,
Santa Clara, and the España square.
They are points of interest for the tourist the Diocesan Museum
(Street of the Seminar), the Municipal Museum of Bastió de Sa Font, the nuns' convent of
Santa Clara, and of course the Cathedral of Menorca, a singular building for its balanced
architecture.
It's a good idea visiting the market, where they are sold all type
of autochthonous products
