The Sea

Pequeños llauts en el puerto de Ciutadella

Menorca, as island that is, is closely bound to the sea. This represents a half hostile one at the same time -a enemy, when the storms of Tramuntana , Gregal or Llebeig -, and an ally in the trade, besides a source of nutritious resources, when the meteorology is favorable. The coast of Menorca presents a lot of names that exemplifies that duality. Marine disasters, shipwrecks like that of the French ship Chanzy that was liquidated with more than a hundred of victims   and an only survivor, they give place to places like Dead's creek, or Bad Passing Cape. Other refer to favorable places for the fishing, or simply nice places.

To such facets has been added, in the last years, the enjoyment of the sea like tourist activity or for the own islanders that in the past visited very few times the beaches. In fact, many old people remember to have seen abundant seals -here known as vells marins - competing with the fishermen for the best fish pieces.

The climate of Menorca favors the nautical tourism in the months of summer, when the winds and the temperatures are soft. Sailing ships and motorboats arrive from the neighboring island of Mallorca, and also from Marseilles, Corsica, Catalonia and the rest of the Spanish eastern coast , in search of the tranquility and cleaning of the menorcan waters. The islanders navigate in the typical llauts, with those that have the habit of giving the turn to the island in a serene trip of among three and seven days.

In winter, for against, the gales and storms force to the fishing fleet to remain tied in port more often of that than they would want.

But soon they forget the months hard of the winter, when, entrance the spring, the Mediterranean opens its arms to the navigators again.

Several    are the options where to choose if the visitor wants to go to navigate: Boats that carry out half-day trips or complete day, companies that rent sailing ships, quick motorboats or small crafts to manage without nauticallicense, or to decide to buy an own craft.
